Beijing represents a typical development pattern of China's bicycle transportation. At one time spectacular waves of bicycles were a common sight on streets. Now, bicycle use is in decline as the number of private cars has increased. To get a better understanding of the current situation, we conducted fieldwork and surveys and interviewed people engaged in the development, use and promotion of bicycles in Beijing.

Internationally, promoting the development of bicycles is no longer just rhetoric. In Europe and Asia, various levels of government support bicycle use through city planning, traffic management and financial taxation policies. We believe through studying these international best practices, we could propose solutions to save the Bicycle Kingdom.
