The Netherlands---¡°A Country on Bicycles¡±

The Netherlands has a population of over 16 million and has a bike ownership rate of almost one bike per citizen---a much higher rate than any other country in the world. Last year alone, 1.3 million bicycles were sold in the Netherlands. It has more than 20,000 kilometers of special bike paths stretching over its 40,000 square kilometers of land area, including a bicycle speedway. This is the Netherlands, the European ¡°Bicycle Kingdom¡± and its capital city Amsterdam, a ¡°City of Bicycles¡±.

For many years, the Netherlands Government has been implementing specific regulations in support of bicycles in terms of road construction, traffic regulations and road management to ensure cyclists¡¯ safety and encourage the use of bicycles. Below are some examples of these measures.

Dedicated bike paths separated from the main road.
Accessible service facilities such as bicycle repair shops, bicycle rental stations and bicycle parking lots.
Traffic signals that give priority to cyclists.
